Crowns and Bridges Services

Dental crowns and bridges are essential for restoring and protecting fractured, discoloured, or damaged teeth and filling gaps left by dental extractions or other causes such as tooth decay or trauma.

These restorations safeguard teeth from further injury or damage and prevent discomfort.

Dental Crown

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, often referred to as caps, are restorations designed to cover and protect a single tooth. A crown can either be affixed to a natural tooth or a dental implant; it serves to restore the tooth’s function.

A patient might require a dental crown for many reasons, including restoring broken teeth, protecting a tooth weakened by decay, providing support for large fillings, reinforcing a tooth following a root canal treatment, or cosmetic improvement.

When the viability of a tooth for a permanent crown is uncertain, Watersedge assists by providing a temporary crown made from acrylic or plastic. Temporary crowns help alleviate patient discomfort and allow time to evaluate the tooth’s condition before deciding on a permanent restoration.

Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are utilized when restorations are connected to each other rather than to individual teeth. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with a single, fixed structure anchored to adjacent natural teeth or implants.

Patients might require a dental bridge to fill gaps left by lost teeth, restore function, preserve appearance, or prevent the movement of adjacent teeth.

Dentists often offer bridges as an alternative to dentures or dental implants. Bridges avoid the palatal coverage seen in partial dentures, making them suitable for patients who find dentures uncomfortable. They are also ideal for patients who cannot undergo implant procedures due to health, financial, or personal constraints. Additionally, insurance often covers bridges, whereas implants may not be covered.

Maryland Bridge

Watersedge Lab offers Maryland bridges as a minimally invasive alternative to traditional dental bridges. This design features a missing tooth replacement with wings bonded to adjacent natural teeth, keeping the abutment teeth intact without the need for prepping or crowning. While less invasive, Maryland bridges are not as strong as other types and may not be suitable for high-biteforce areas.

Precision and Semi-Precision Attachments

At Watersedge Dental Laboratory, we also specialize in advanced bridgework using precision and semi-precision attachments. These solutions are ideal for complex cases, acting as stress breakers to allow slight movement and prevent failure. They help manage forces on supporting teeth, ensuring durability and longevity. We’re happy to provide thorough guidance on their use.

Dental Crown and Bridge Materials

At Watersedge Dental Laboratory, we use premium, durable materials that are biocompatible and aesthetically pleasing. Our range of materials allows us to customize each solution to meet your patient’s needs.

E.max is an attractive all-ceramic material that offers superior aesthetics. A key advantage of e.max is it can be bonded rather than cemented, creating a more harmonious fusion between the restorative material and dental enamel. This enhances retention where there is sufficient enamel to work with, resulting in a natural-looking and durable restoration for crowns and bridges.

Zirconia is ceramic known for its strength and durability. It can be used in its full contour (or monolithic form) or layered with porcelain fused to the exterior. The layered framework offers the strength of zirconia with the natural beauty of porcelain, making it a versatile and robust option for crowns or bridges.

Full metal alloy crowns, including those made from gold, other noble alloys, and base-metal alloys, are highly valued for their exceptional durability. However, due to their distinctive appearance, they are often an ideal choice for out-of-sight teeth, such as molars. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns and bridges combine metal’s strength with porcelain’s aesthetics. These restorations can feature a strong occlusal table made of a metal alloy with zirconia and ceramic on the front surface, ensuring strength and beauty.

We craft temporary crowns made from acrylic or plastic resin.

Diagnostic Models

As part of our comprehensive crown and bridge services, Watersedge Dental Laboratory offers diagnostic wax-ups and digitally printed models. These tools serve as powerful visual aids in case presentations, significantly enhancing patient understanding and acceptance.

We use white wax to create a physical diagnostic model that demonstrates the patient’s future smile. This service is chargeable and priced per tooth based on the amount of restorative work needed.

We also offer digitally created diagnostic models, which involve printing a 3D model in white resin. This service is also chargeable and priced based on the labour required to produce the model.

Our most experienced technicians meticulously check all diagnostic models to ensure they are attainable and functional. We present only realistic scenarios with predictable outcomes, ensuring successful treatment and happy patients.

Verification Appointment for Improved Success Rates

At Watersedge Dental Laboratory, we offer a unique service for cases with high aesthetic demands: a complimentary verification appointment that ensures accurate colour matching for crowns, bridges, and other restorations in the front of the mouth.

After performing a custom shade match and producing the restoration, we invite patients back to verify the colour against their existing teeth and make any necessary adjustments before the final installation.

This verification appointment benefits dentists and patients by reducing additional dental appointments and associated overhead costs while keeping the patient involved in the process. Additionally, this critical step significantly decreases the need for custom stains, making the process more predictable and efficient.

This service exemplifies the high standard of care and attention to detail that you can expect from Watersedge.

Advanced Crown and Bridge Technology in Ottawa

At Watersedge Dental Laboratory, we employ digital technologies and analog methods to produce the highest-quality crowns and bridges.

Digital Technologies:

As a CAD/CAM laboratory, we leverage the precision and efficiency of computer-aided design and manufacture to create most of our restorations. Our state-of-the-art milling machines and scanners enable us to achieve exceptional accuracy and consistency. Additionally, we incorporate 3D metal printing technology, further enhancing our ability to produce precise and durable dental components.

Analog Techniques:

While the majority of restorations are crafted digitally, certain cases benefit from the meticulous nature of analog techniques. For example, we continue to use the lost wax technique to create metal substructures for some complex crown and bridge work. This process, similar to techniques used by jewellers, allows us to achieve a level of detail and quality craftsmanship that digital methods cannot always match.

FAQs

It is best to avoid mixing different metals in a patient’s mouth because a mix of metal alloys can lead to a galvanic reaction. When different metals interact with saliva, they can create an electric current and potentially cause discomfort or a metallic taste. If possible, try to use the same material or a compatible one for any new restorations.

For restorations of highly visible front teeth, Watersedge offers a complimentary verification appointment to verify and adjust the colour as needed, ensuring the final restoration blends seamlessly with the patient’s natural teeth.

Absolutely! Our team of skilled dental technicians can collaborate with you to create a phased treatment plan, ensuring that each phase of the restoration process aligns with the future stages.

When a tooth breaks and we are asked to craft a restoration, we can often identify the underlying cause of the breakage. For example, worn-down cuspids may fail to protect the back teeth properly. In such cases, we thoroughly assess the patient’s occlusion and overall oral function and then communicate our findings with you. This proactive approach not only leads to a more comprehensive treatment plan but also helps ensure the longevity and health of the patient’s entire dentition by addressing the root cause of the problem.

No, there is no need for additional impressions. Watersedge provides a detailed treatment plan indicating where and how composite buttons should be positioned, along with a laminate shell to replicate this in the patient’s mouth.

Our team is committed to ensuring successful outcomes for our dental partners and their patients. Watersedge will work with you to rectify any issues and offer the necessary support to get the treatment back on track.
